The DEM Party has nominated journalist and LGBTI+ rights defender Yıldız Tar to Turkey’s Peace Process Commission, officially the Parliamentary Commission on Democracy, Fraternity, and National Unity. Tar, KaosGL.org’s editor-in-chief, said peace is only possible “on the basis of equal citizenship for all” and cannot exclude LGBTI+ people. A prominent voice in Turkey’s LGBTI+ movement, they were detained for 102 days earlier this year over past reporting on the 2012–2013 peace process. DEM Party members say inclusivity is essential to ensuring lasting reconciliation.
The DEM Party has nominated KaosGL.org Editor-in-Chief Yıldız Tar to join the Peace Process Commission, officially named the Parliamentary Commission on Democracy, Fraternity, and National Unity, which is tasked with fostering dialogue and reconciliation in Turkey.
“Social peace processes cannot move forward by ignoring the experiences and demands of LGBTI+ people. Peace is only possible on the basis of equal citizenship for all,” Tar told KaosGL.org.
A leading journalist and LGBTI+ rights advocate, Tar was detained for 102 days earlier this year over interviews and phone records from the 2012–2013 peace process. Since their release, they have continued documenting human rights violations. In 2022, they received the Jury’s Special Prize at the Musa Anter Journalism Awards.
DEM Party representatives emphasized that inclusivity is essential for lasting peace, pledging to ensure all communities affected by conflict have a voice in the process.
