The far-right and Islamist Yeniden Refah Party held its 3rd Ordinary Grand Congress on 16 November. The Russian Embassy also attended the congress.
In a statement shared on its social media accounts, the Embassy voiced support for the party’s anti-LGBTI+ stance, saying: “We have taken note of the similarity of our positions on issues such as the preservation of traditional values-especially family values-and the need to resist contemporary forms of neocolonialism.”
The Embassy added that Russian diplomats attended the congress upon invitation and thanked the party’s chair Fatih Erbakan and deputy chair Doğan Bekin.
Erbakan targeted the Istanbul Convention, Law No. 6284, and LGBTI+ associations at the congress
During the congress, Erbakan targeted the Istanbul Convention, Law No. 6284, and LGBTI+ people.
Referring to LGBTI+ associations, Erbakan said in his speech: “During the AKP era, 22 LGBT associations received establishment permits from the Ministry of Interior. With Law No. 6284, the foundations of the family were destroyed,” adding that if they come to power, they will repeal the Istanbul Convention in Parliament as well.
Targeting LGBTI+ people, Erbakan continued: “We will put an end to LGBTI+ associations and activities, which are among the most significant indicators of social collapse and immorality.”
He went on:
“From now on, the struggle will be between those who claim to protect women by relying on Western-imported laws like Law No. 6284-which have devastated families-and the cadres of Yeniden Refah who will protect women, families, and children with local and national laws. Marriages have declined, divorces have increased, families have fallen apart. Children have been left stranded, and the responsibility falls on us. We promise: We will abolish the Istanbul Convention in the Grand National Assembly of Turkey. Instead of Law No. 6284, we will introduce a local and national law that protects women while also protecting the family. We will protect the family, the children, and the women-we will. From now on, the struggle will be between the forces submitting to global impositions and the cadres of Yeniden Refah who prioritize the interests of our nation and our country. We will put an end to LGBTI+ associations and activities, which are among the most important indicators of social collapse and immorality.”
