The murderers of Sudenaz recorded the killing Kaos GL - News Portal for LGBTI+

On September 14, 2024, the day the Anti-LGBTİ+ Big Family March was held, in Diyarbakır, two men named A.A and İ.U attacked trans woman Sudenaz U. and her friend G. in the Kayapınar district. Sudenaz U., who was subjected to an attack with cutting instruments, died at the scene; G. was injured.

It emerged that A.A and İ.U recorded the murder. KaosGL.org obtained the audio recording that entered the case file.

In the approximately 13-minute audio recording that entered the case file, defendant A.A is heard hurling open threats at Sudenaz and G., who were in the home: “Open the door, look, I’ll call everyone in the building, I’ll lift them, I’ll say they’re doing prostitution here.”

After the door was forced open, despite Sudenaz and G.’s warnings of “get out of my house,” the attackers-who did not leave the house- are reflected in the recordings as A.A intimidatingly saying, “Son, I’m not leaving, if I want I can gather 50 men here now.”

After the incident, footsteps and frantic breathing that suggest A.A and İ.U left the apartment and ran toward the stairs are heard.

The audio recording continued after the attack

The audio recording continues after the attack. In this section İ.U is heard turning to A.A and saying, “Brother, no problem, they can’t find us. Let them deal with the hospital, let them deal with the police for three or five days… We’ll say we weren’t accomplices, we did it together, that’s it. We did this together, that’s it. Don’t go against your brother’s word, I came to die for you. I came to kill a man,” he says.

The recording also includes that A.A and İ.U stopped at the scene and intended to watch Sudenaz and G.; while A.A says, “Brother, come sit across, let’s watch them,” İ.U replies, “Let’s not watch them.”

Lawyer Okan Altekin from the Diyarbakır Bar Association LGBTİ+ Rights Commission evaluated the file for KaosGL.org.

There are camera images and a witness

Emphasizing that the defendants try to escape the crime by blaming each other, Altekin said there are camera images and a resident of the apartment who witnessed the incident:

“This murder was committed by two people. One is İ.U, the other A.A. The focal point of this murder is that the two committed this crime together. Although the defendants try to exonerate themselves by blaming each other, there are camera images and an audio recording. At the same time, a witness in the apartment sees A.A and İ.U with a bloody knife after the incident.”

Defendant A.A threatened Sudenaz by saying “I will not let you live here”

Altekin emphasized that defendant A.A threatened trans woman Sudenaz and used the following words:

“A.A, fabricating excuses over the events of the previous day, threatens Sudenaz with death. There he says, ‘I will not let you live here, I will come back tomorrow’ and the next day he goes to the house taking İlyas. They burst inside with a knife, A.A holds the knife to Sudenaz’s neck. While the other trans woman tries to flee, she is stabbed in the hip.”

The entirety of the murder was recorded: “The audio recording reveals the hate motive”

Altekin, underlining that the defendants planned and premeditated the murder, said the murder was recorded from start to finish and this recording clearly shows the hate motive with these words:

“Both defendants plan and design this. In fact, the audio recording is turned on. The defendants record the entire incident. While going to the house A.A turns on the recording, and all conversations are also in the transcript of the recording. The hate motive also emerges in the recording. In the recording İ.U, A.A says, ‘I came to kill a man for you.’ This audio recording also clearly reveals the intent to kill.”

The hearing of the trial was also held

The trial of defendants A.A and İ.U was held today at Diyarbakır 7th High Criminal Court. While the Ministry of Family and Social Services’ request to join the case was accepted, the requests of the Diyarbakır Bar Association Women’s Rights Center and LGBTI+ Rights Commission to join were rejected.

At the hearing, the defendants blamed each other. In its opinion as to the merits, the prosecution stated that the crime of attempted robbery was committed by A.A and İ.U. For both defendants, it requested punishment for “aggravated intentional killing of a woman out of outrage at not being able to commit another crime.”

The court ruled for the continuation of the defendants’ detention. The trial was adjourned to December 18.
