RTÜK fines MUBI over “normalization of homosexuality” Kaos GL - News Portal for LGBTI+

Turkey’s Radio and Television Supreme Council (RTÜK) has fined the streaming platform MUBI over the film Passages, citing “the normalization of LGBT” as the justification.

The Council claimed that certain scenes in the film “normalize homosexuality and extramarital relationships.” In its ruling, RTÜK argued that this “undermines the institution of the family”, “harms gender roles” and “corrupts society.” The film was removed from the platform’s catalogue on the grounds of “obscenity” and “violation of public morality”, while MUBI was issued a maximum administrative fine.

Another penalty for the series Jasmine

The Supreme Council also imposed a new penalty on the series Jasmine, which airs on HBO Max. According to RTÜK, various scenes in the series “normalize sexuality as a means of establishing a standard of living”, a situation the Council claimed could have “negative mental, psychological, and moral effects”, particularly on young viewers.

Citing violations of the principles of “public morality” and “protection of the family”, RTÜK ordered the series to be removed from the catalogue and imposed a maximum administrative fine.
