Yusuf Tekin said that following the declaration of this year as “the Family Year,” one of the main themes of the education year is “family.”
Minister of National Education Yusuf Tekin spoke at Anadolu Agency’s Editor’s Desk at Adile Sultan Pavilion. Tekin noted that the 2025–2026 academic year began as of September 1. He said that following the declaration of 2025 as “the Family Year,” they had asked teachers and administrators to intensify activities with the theme of “family.”
Tekin stated, “As of Monday, our President will inaugurate our academic year, and we had also asked our colleagues to focus on these two main themes this year—family and the ‘Green Homeland.’”
He emphasized that the academic year began with a circular shared with provincial directors of national education, outlining 55–56 points, and added:
“This year, as you know, one of the main themes of our academic year is the fact that our President declared this year ‘the Family Year.’ For that reason, we are asking our teacher colleagues and administrator colleagues to intensify activities with the theme of ‘family.’ That’s the first point. Second, we were devastated over the summer. Forest fires occurred not only in our country but also in countries within our shared geography, the Mediterranean region—Spain, Italy, Greece. In each of these countries, there were more forest fires compared to previous years, with greater levels of destruction. We experienced a similar process here. To raise awareness on this matter, together with our Minister of Agriculture and Forestry, the two ministries jointly decided this year to organize a series of activities with our children—both in terms of planting trees and caring for forests and trees.”
About the Family Year
The year 2025 was declared “the Family Year” by President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan. The initiative, which foresees the implementation of various events and projects aimed at “protecting and strengthening the family” and targets LGBTI+ people, was updated as “the Family Decade” at the International Family Forum held in May under the theme “Protecting and Strengthening the Family in a Globalizing World.”
In his speech at the forum, Erdoğan targeted LGBTI+ people as follows:
“Artists, businessmen, politicians, and scientists are being lynched and practically turned into corpses simply for criticizing the plague of LGBT. Another painful reality is this: those who deny human nature through projects of degendering are exploiting our innocent children by carrying out irreversible medical interventions on their bodies. We absolutely cannot stand by and watch this exploitation. The attempt by these dirty and disgraceful hands—which reach out even to our little ones aged four or five—to legitimize perverse relations that disgrace humanity is of course not a coincidence. These are enemies of humanity, enemies of women, enemies of children. The struggle against LGBT perversion is at the same time a struggle for freedom, a struggle to save dignity, and a struggle for the future of humanity.”
