On March 6, Turkey’s Minister of Justice Akın Gürlek once again targeted LGBTI+ people during an iftar (the evening meal during ramadan) program organized with media representatives. Speaking about the 12th Judicial Package, Gürlek said that new criminal regulations regarding social media content are being planned.

The Minister stated that they are particularly working on regulations aimed at social media content creators and said, “We will close the existing legal loophole in the Turkish Penal Code concerning social media content creators (YouTubers, influencers, etc.) who direct children toward violence, lack of gender, or perverse trends, and we will swiftly implement the necessary criminal sanctions.”

Gürlek also said that this work is being carried out in coordination with the Ministry of Family and Social Services, and that new regulations regarding social media use are being planned. He added, “With the 12th Judicial Package, we plan to introduce restrictions on social media use for individuals under the age of 16, and for users over 16, implement security measures such as verification through an SMS confirmation code.”

Additionally, Gürlek stated that new practices are being planned for children who have committed offenses under the 12th Judicial Package, saying, “We are working on new models aimed at the rehabilitation of children who have committed offenses and their reintegration into society. In the fight against drugs, we plan to implement a legal regulation that will allow treatment processes at AMATEM to begin while inmates are still in prison, six months before their release. Our goal is to prevent a return to drug use after release.”
