Following the request of the Ministry of Family, which led to a ban on access to Mabel Matiz’s song Perperişan, and the Ministry of Interior filing a criminal complaint against Matiz on the grounds of “obscenity,” the artist went to the courthouse yesterday (September 22) accompanied by police to give a statement.

The singer, against whom the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office had launched an investigation for “obscenity,” gave his statement. Afterward, Matiz was referred to the judge and was banned from traveling abroad.

“The purpose of my music is to unite people”

In his statement, Matiz said:

“I released the song on my social media accounts together with my team. I did not include any intent or purpose containing obscenity in the lyrics of this song in any way.”

The artist added, using the words:

“I wrote this song with the same purpose I write the content of my other songs.”

He continued:

“The purpose of my music is not to provoke people or lead them in a negative way, but rather to unite people and inspire positive feelings.”

“In works that I think might provoke negative feelings, I take the necessary initiative”

Matiz explained that the phrase “cici toy bebe” in the song meant “a raw/innocent individual,” and that the lyrics “Diyo şeytan üstüne atla, sal kuşu hanesine” were intended to mean “send news to your home.” He continued in his statement:

“In works where I think they might provoke negative feelings, I take the necessary initiative and make interventions, including changing words. For example, in the folk song Dam Üstüne Çul Serer, I change the phrase ‘Küçükten yar sevene cennete gönderseler’ (May they send to heaven the one who loves a young person) to ‘Güzelden yar sevene cennete gönderseler’ (May they send to heaven the one who loves a beautiful person) and perform it this way in my concerts.”
