The Human Rights Association (IHD) Documentation Center has released its 2024 Human Rights Report.

According to the report, all demonstrations and events were banned for a total of 458 days across 24 provinces throughout 2024. At least 1,811 people were detained during police interventions against assemblies and protests. At least 127 people were arrested due to their social media posts. Punitive measures against opposition politicians intensified: 2 mayors were arrested, and trustees were appointed to 8 municipalities.

Attacks against women and LGBTI+ people intensify

The report also includes violations targeting LGBTI+ people. It emphasizes that the government’s “family” discourse has accelerated attacks against women and LGBTI+ communities:

“The discriminatory, racist, phobic, and hateful rhetoric and conduct of the dominant political actors towards marginalized groups, primarily Kurds, Alevis, LGBTI+ people, and refugees/asylum seekers, have reached an alarming level.”

Four people killed, seven injured in homophobic and transphobic attacks

The report highlights that the right to life of women and LGBTI+ individuals continued to be targeted throughout 2024. According to the report, at least four people were killed and seven were injured in 23 homophobic and transphobic attacks against LGBTI+ people:

“Turkey’s fundamental unresolved issues manifested once again in 2024 as violations of the right to life. On one hand, deaths resulting from the conflict environment rooted in the Kurdish issue; on the other, workplace killings, and gender-based violence targeting women and LGBTI+ people… Additionally, deaths caused by increasing regulatory shortcomings and negligence parallel to Turkey’s authoritarian turn, and racist/discriminatory attacks targeting refugees, Alevis, and non-Muslim religious communities… In this context, according to the findings of the IHD Documentation Center for 2024, at least 6,094 people were deprived of their right to life, and 434 were injured.”
