Minister of Family and Social Services Mahinur Özdemir Göktaş spoke at the 1st Ordinary General Assembly of the Family and Youth Movement on Saturday, October 11.

In her speech, Göktaş targeted LGBTI+ people, saying: “In today’s world, global trends such as degenderization and the harms of technology unfortunately affect the family structure. Movements that lead to the erosion of our values and the loneliness of our youth are, unfortunately, becoming very widespread.”

Referring to the Family Institute established following the Family Action Plan, which for the first time explicitly targeted LGBTI+ people, Göktaş said:

“The ‘Vision Document and Action Plan for the Protection and Strengthening of the Family,’ which we announced on May 15, 2024, International Family Day, is a concrete expression of this determination. This work also carries special importance as it is the first action plan centered on the family. With the action plan, we are working to raise the welfare level of families and increase the effectiveness of our social services and policies. On the other hand, under the chairmanship of our Vice President, we established the Population Policies Board, where we address population-related policies and services. In addition, we founded the Family Institute to conduct research that will guide our social policies.”

Arguing that the fertility rate has declined, Göktaş said, “We have fallen to the lowest level in the country’s history, with a fertility rate of 1.48. This rate is well below the replacement level of 2.1. If effective measures are not taken, it is projected that by the year 2100, the median age in our country will reach 60. Therefore, in the long term, our country may face serious economic, social, and demographic risks. This is why the 2025 Year of the Family holds great importance.”

Stating that “the family is the most important institution that raises generations and transmits cultural identity and values to new generations,” Göktaş said:

“It should not be forgotten that what keeps a society standing is not only its economic or political power. The real strength lies in the moral values and family structure of that society. If the foundation and strength of this society are the family, then the architects of that strength and foundation are our young people.”
