President and AKP Chair Recep Tayyip Erdoğan made statements on the agenda on April 20 following the cabinet meeting. In his remarks regarding the school attacks in Siverek and Kahramanmaraş, Erdoğan shifted the focus to LGBTI+ people.

Stating that they stand for “national and moral values,” Erdoğan targeted LGBTI+ people, describing them as “global despotism,” “degenderization,” and a “calamity”:

“Especially our struggle against LGBT movements, which have turned into a form of global despotism, has been one of the issues for which we have faced the harshest criticism. As we have tried to put a stop to this calamity, some have used every opportunity at their disposal to pave the way for degenderization movements. Those well-known columnists from their corners have attempted to lecture us on freedom. These circles have persistently ignored that freedom comes together with the concept of responsibility, and that there can be no freedom without responsibility. When it comes to the mental and physical health of our youth, we will not bow to empty rhetoric.”

Emphasizing that they will continue policies aimed at “protecting the family,” Erdoğan also made remarks about digital platforms.

Saying, “We are going through a period in which certain digital sharing applications are corrupting the minds of our children, and social media platforms have turned into a sewer” Erdoğan added:

“Here, I would especially like to draw attention to the special position of the family. Education, socialization, and etiquette begin within the family. The family is the carrier of culture, of national and moral values; it is the first school where compassion toward other living beings is learned.”
