DEM Party Women’s Assembly Spokesperson Halide Türkoğlu: “Every sentence in the judicial draft reflects intolerance of human rights” Kaos GL - News Portal for LGBTI+

Halide Türkoğlu, Spokesperson for the DEM Party Women’s Assembly, made a press statement on current issues and the upcoming International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, 25 November.

In her statement, Türkoğlu reacted to the 11th Judicial Package, which includes anti-LGBTI+ provisions, saying:

“Just as we did in the past, we will continue to strengthen our common struggle against the open attacks and human rights violations targeting different sexual orientations and gender identities.”

She continued:

“While women and peoples expect politicians and those in power to lay out roadmaps for democratization and peacebuilding, there is now a draft package that has been leaked to the public under the name of the ‘11th Judicial Package.’ Before addressing the issue, I want to emphasize once again: no regulation prepared behind closed doors, isolated from society’s realities and women’s demands, divisive and polarizing, can serve the peace of this country. No legal regulation made with a male-dominated and monolithic mentality that disregards democracy and human rights has ever had, or will ever have, legitimacy in the eyes of women. The so-called leaked 11th Judicial Package contains monolithic, sexist, racist provisions that practically legalize fascism, target LGBTI+ people, and fuel hate crimes. Bringing such a regulation to Parliament would serve nothing but to feed divisive and polarizing politics. Just as we did before, we will continue to strengthen our joint struggle against the open attacks and rights violations targeting different sexual orientations and gender identities.”

“The 11th Judicial Package cannot bring social peace”

Referring to the provisions in the package concerning gender transition and the juvenile justice system, Türkoğlu said, “It is the government’s duty to make peace with diversity,” and continued:

“It is not the political power but doctors and healthcare professionals who should determine at what age and under what conditions gender transition can begin. What falls to the political power is to implement the words of these professionals through legal regulations, to respect and recognize individuals’ gender transition processes, and to take measures against hate crimes. Every sentence in this judicial draft reflects intolerance toward democracy, equality, human rights, and diversity. Likewise, the regulation leaked in the package that would prevent children in conflict with the law from benefiting from sentence reductions is made without any awareness of its consequences. Instead of addressing the reasons that drive children to crime, focusing only on the act itself and punishing children like adults cannot solve this problem. Based on all this, we warn the political power: social peace and a democratic society are built on living together freely and equally in diversity. It is clear that social peace cannot be achieved through such regulations.”
