DEM Party Women’s Assembly and HDK Women’s Assembly came together with LGBTI+ individuals in Istanbul under the slogan “Together in Building the Peace and Democratic Society Process.”

On August 17, DEM Party Women’s Assembly and HDK Women’s Assembly met with LGBTI+ activists in Istanbul. The meeting was attended by HDK Co-Spokesperson Meral Danış Beştaş, DEM Party Women’s Assembly Spokesperson Halide Türkoğlu, MPs Özgül Saki and Kezban Konukçu, as well as members of the Women’s Coordination.
At the meeting held under the slogan “Together in Building the Peace and Democratic Society Process,” participants discussed the challenges of living in a patriarchal society, discrimination fueled by gendered codes, heterosexism, and homophobia. They explored ways to strengthen the collective struggle against these attacks. It was emphasized that expanding multiple areas of struggle plays a critical role in the socialization of peace.
The meeting also addressed the targeting of women and LGBTI+ people under the so-called “Year of the Family” and the spiral of violence that LGBTI+ individuals are pushed into during wartime processes. It was emphasized that the demand for equality, freedom, and justice is of vital importance in the face of these attacks.
The Women’s Assembly stated that it provided an important platform to expand the common struggle for peace and a democratic society. It was emphasized that a politics should be built that strengthens the role of social movements, which are the agents of social change and transformation.
