Turkish pop singer Mabel Matiz’s new song “Ha Leylim,” released on August 11, is under investigation by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office on grounds of “obscenity”.
Turkish pop singer and songwriter Mabel Matiz’s new song “Ha Leylim,” released on Tuesday, August 11, has been subjected to an investigation by the Istanbul Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office on the grounds of “obscenity.”
In a statement issued by the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office, it was stated that the music video for the song, together with its lyrics and visuals, “falls within the scope of the offense of obscenity,” and the statement continued:
“It has been assessed that the music video for the song titled ‘Ha Leylim,’ performed by the singer publicly known as Mabel Matiz and released on digital platforms, together with its lyrics and visuals, falls within the scope of the offense of obscenity regulated under Article 226 of the Turkish Penal Code No. 5237. Therefore, the Chief Public Prosecutor’s Office has ex officio initiated an investigation in order to establish the material facts and carry out the necessary investigative procedures.”
The music video for Matiz’s new song depicts a traditional wedding in Turkey. Matiz appears in the video as a musician attending the wedding. Another man, played by Matiz, repeatedly makes eye contact with the groom, and the two gaze at each other for extended periods. At the end of the video, the man played by Matiz and the groom perform a traditional dance facing each other.
