Emine Erdoğan, wife of President and AKP Chair Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, once again targeted LGBTI+ people.

Speaking on 6 December at the TRT International Children’s Media Summit, held at the Haliç Congress Center under the title “Children’s Media in the Digital Age: Strengthening the Family, Building Values”, Erdoğan pointed to LGBTI+ people through social media and digital platforms, saying that “we are under siege.”

Referring to the results of TÜİK’s 2024 “Information Technologies Usage in Children” survey, Erdoğan said:

“In our country, internet usage among children aged six to fifteen exceeds ninety one percent. Although seventy five percent use it for educational purposes, approximately eighty four percent use it to watch videos, seventy three percent to play games and seventy two percent for social media. Research clearly shows that digital games push children toward suicide, make them prone to violence, cause them to lose their sense of reality, and reduce their academic success. It is known that mobile phones lead to memory deterioration, decreased cognitive skills, and even antisocial behavior. On social media platforms, children face many risks, from online abuse to cyberbullying, from degendering propaganda to digital addiction.”

Claiming that harmful content on social media and digital platforms affects children, Erdoğan continued:

“On digital streaming platforms and television, we are also besieged by content that normalizes violence and subjects that do not align with our values. Across all segments of society, there is a growing criticism and a demand for ‘clean content.’”
